Why Hocking Hills is so Great to Visit in the Winter

Hocking Hills has something unique and beautiful to offer during all the four seasons. Why I love Hocking Hills in the winter especially December, oh so many reasons. It is truly magical. It is calm and peaceful, and if you get lucky, it is a winter wonderland. We typically do not get too much snow, just enough in my POV to dust the trees and make everything look so fairytale like. Bring good hiking shoes, energy snacks, water and be ready to hike in the crisp clean air and not even break a sweat. I love hiking when the weather is cool and all I have to do is layer properly.

If you are looking to explore Hocking Hills State Park at a leisure pace, Ash Cave is a great option. Within just a few minutes, you can already see these amazing rock formations.

December Holiday Treasure Hunt

The treasure hunt is on again through December 12th. There are a number of local shops that participate. It is a way to support local businesses. You enjoy the charm of these unique shops and can enter to win for an exciting sweepstakes giveaway.

December at Nature Mystique Retreat our Magical Earth Retreat

There’s plenty to keep you warm in the winter months at Nature Mystique Retreat. From your very own cedar wood hot tubs right at your hobbit inspired and Moroccan adobe cabins to the onsite sauna (for a promotional complimentary winter guest reservation), you can stay warm in the winter. Cozy up to your indoor fireplaces while you enjoy a hot chocolate. Make a delicious comfort food and stream one of your favorite winter movies in the evening. My personal favorites are Frozen and A Christmas Carol for the kids. Fargo if you are looking for something a bit edgy to watch. What gets me in the holiday spirit is sitting by the fire watching Love Actually or an old classic like March of the Wooden Soldiers.

Annual Hike

The Hocking Hills annual winter hike tradition continues. On January 18, 2025 generally at 9am (double check the date) join your fellow hiking buddies for a six mile hike from Old Man’s Cave to Ash Cave. There is a shuttle bus that will bring you back to Old Man’s Cave after this exciting event. It is a great way to enjoy the park, meet new people and do a six mile hike. With a sense of comradery and support, you can do the 6 mile trek through our favorite state park.

I love the winter in Hocking Hills, especially December. It is definitely a special place to visit in Ohio, just 75 minutes from Columbus and a 2 to 4 hour drive from a lot of the major cities and towns in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana and more. If you don’t like crowds and are looking for great winter rates, consider a winter visit. Nature Mystique Retreat is open all year round and you have an opportunity to enjoy the hot tub, sauna and star gaze as we have both running all winter long.

We at Nature Mystique Retreat, hope to see you in the winter! We are just 3 miles from Hocking Hills State Park and can’t wait for your next visit.
